HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

CONSTRUCTION:

Pundit Avaya Raj Shakya a master artisan of Siva Deva Sanskarit Omkuli Rudravarna Mahavihar visited the Mahabodhi temple at Bodhigaya in India some 500 years ago. He thought of installation of similar styled temple in his homeland. He prepared a PAUBHA(Thanka) as a model of the temple, with all the measurements and traditional rituals as required. The king at the moment Amar Malla appointed Avaya Raj Shakya as the Nayak Dittha (chief officer) for the work of minting the copper coins from the mines explored at Chitlang had already honored by the nation. During his stay at Chitlang, one day he heard the divine revelation of the goddess VIDHYADHARI DEVI demanding the construction of the temple he had designed. Then he started to build the temple honoring the instruction of the goddess, referring the Thanka painting. He placed the foundation stone in the year 685 Nepal Sambat (1564 A.D.). However, unfortunately he could not complete the temple himself. Obviously, the obligation of the construction was inherited this offspring, namely, his sons Mayerju, Byadharju, Jagannathju, Heyrju, Buddhaju; grandson: Jeevaraj, and great grandson Jayamuniju. This way, coming up to the fourth generation and thirty-six long years of hardship and devotion, the temple was finally, inaugurated in the year 721 N.S(1600A.D) by the King at the moment Sivasingha Malla on the auspicious day of Ashad sukla saptami(wednesday)

According to the chronicles, sculptoral work was done by Ratnamuniju and hakuju; stone craft was done by Kutidevaju; constructional work was done by Lankadevaju and Vairavju; and mud work was done by Aashaju and Shiriju

After the inauguration, Pandit Jayamuni Shakya traveled to Sikkim and offered the 'Prasad' (flower, sweets etc shared as the holy blessings) of the rituals of the inauguration upon a ' Bavhu' (a metallic plate used at rituals) to the king of Sikkim at the moment. The king with hapiness and excitement, filled the BAVHU with gold coins and returned it. Selflessly and religiously, the offered wealth was used for the decoration of the lord Machhindranath chariot with golden art sheets. Even today, we can see the beautiful golden art worked sheets in the chariot of lord Machhindranath.
